“I dropped chemistry in the sixth form” or “I never understood that”. This is how many people react when you mention at a party or family gathering that you studied chemistry. Yet most chemists are convinced (female chemists too, incidentally) that their subject is hugely fascinating and important for humanity. How can the gulf between the two sides – chemistry enthusiasts and non-chemists – be bridged? A search for clues from the perspective of someone who sits between all sides.

  • “The general public” – Who am I dealing with?
    • What is meant by “members of the public with no scientific background”?
    • Is there a “general public”?
    • Why it is important to know your target audience
  • “People, animals, sensations” – What do members of the public with no scientific background find interesting?
    • The most popular articles in the science section
    • “What does this have to do with me?” – Readers’ or listeners’ perspectives
  • “How do I explain it to my child?” – A brief digression on language
    • How content from chemistry can be communicated
    • Clarity
    • Entertainment
  • What needs to be done. A personal conclusion
