Conference chemistry of construction materials & ICCCM

5th International Conference on the Chemistry of Construction Materials
8–10 September 2025
Technical University of Munich, Garching
Chair: Prof. Dr. Torben Gädt
Programme
The 5th International Conference on the Chemistry of Construction Materials (ICCCM) in Garching/Munich brought together more than 200 international researchers for three days of stimulating scientific exchange — a vibrant gathering that underscored the field's momentum and global reach. Across two parallel lecture halls and a lively poster session, the programme showcased the full breadth of modern construction chemistry: from carbonation and cement hydration, to the rheology of reactive binders, digitalisation, advanced admixture design, and innovative characterisation methods. The depth and diversity of contributions made clear that the community is tackling the most pressing challenges in sustainable construction with creativity and rigour. Inspiring keynote lectures from Arnaud Perrot, Alisa Machner, Gaurav Sant, Hegoi Manzano, Alejandro Fernandez Martinez, and Nikol Zizkova spanned topics from fresh-state characterisation and C-S-H nucleation to bold decarbonisation concepts and atomistic simulation — outlining an ambitious perspective of a field advancing towards a more sustainable future.

Programme
The 4th International Conference on the Chemistry of Construction Materials (ICCCM 2022) took place in Karlsruhe from 26 to 28 September 2022. Alongside scientific presentations, workshops, the General Assembly and award ceremonies of the Division of the Chemistry of Construction Materials of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), the social programme was also not neglected: there was a get-together evening as well as a gala dinner at the ZKM. Claudia Birkner from the GDCh conference team, together with Prof. Andreas Gerdes (KIT Innovation HUB) and his team of 11, were more than satisfied with the 216 participants and with the running of the conference.

Programme
From 10 to 12 October 2016, the 2nd International Conference on the Chemistry of Construction Materials (ICCCM), organised by the Division of the Chemistry of Construction Materials of the GDCh, was hosted by Prof. Dr. Plank at the Technical University of Munich in Garching.
The 1st ICCСM was held in Berlin in 2013, and once again the ICCCM conference was considered a major event for construction chemists in Europe and worldwide. More than 370 experts from 28 countries attended the conference, which featured a very high standard of scientific oral presentations. Alongside the conference sessions, 93 researchers presented their posters.
The concept of the ICCCM is to create a place for scientists from research centres, universities and industrial companies to present their work and discuss results, as well as to determine the future direction of technology and evaluate the challenges facing their industry. ICCCM 2016 expanded the successful format of the 1st conference and embraced a wide range of problems in the field of chemistry of construction materials. The main sessions of the conference were preceded by two specialised workshops on “PCE Superplasticisers” and “Surface Chemistry in Construction Materials”. Leading experts in these fields answered questions relating to the chemistry of PCE superplasticisers, the synthesis of their products and derivatives, as well as the interaction of PCE polymers with Portland cement, and provided an opportunity to gain valuable practical knowledge about organic surfactants and the effects of silicon-organic compounds on the surface protection of construction materials.
The 1st main session of the conference was introduced by the host, Prof. Dr. Johann Plank (TU Munich), with the topic “Cement hydration studied under microgravity conditions on parabolic flights”. All stages of Portland cement hydration, but especially crystallisation, in experiments during zero-G aeroplane parabolic flights were presented. Prof. Dr. Xiangming Kong (Tsinghua University, China) presented his research on the interaction of colloidal latex polymer systems with Portland cement. In particular, the relationship between the charge properties of latex polymer particles and their behaviour in cement systems was emphasised. Lime, a popular binder with a long history in construction, was the focus of the presentation by Prof. Koen van Balen (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium) on “Carbonation and durability of construction materials”. Prof. Dr. Gwenn Le Saout (French Center for Material Research of Ecole des Mines d’Ales) delivered a keynote speech on “Calcium aluminate-based hydraulic binders.” He showed that this type of material is strongly related to the rheological and workability properties of several products, such as tile adhesives and screeds. Another keynote was given by Prof. Dr. Jason Ideker (University of Oregon, USA), who presented the latest research results in the field of alkali-silica (ASR) reactions in concrete and discussed potential methods for preventing the destruction of concrete structures.

International Conference on the Chemistry of Construction Materials
Programme
From 7 to 9 October 2013, the Construction Materials and Chemistry of Construction Materials department at TU Berlin hosted the 1st International Conference on the Chemistry of Construction Materials. Organised in cooperation with the German Chemical Society, the Conference had an international character for the first time that year. The conference focused, among other things, on topics relating to the use of sustainable construction materials for the future, the use of innovative mortar and concrete admixtures, and current research in cement chemistry. During the three-day event, more than 400 participants from 26 countries were able to learn about current research and development in the field of construction materials through over 80 specialist presentations and more than 100 poster presentations. In addition to the exchange of expertise, the evenings of the event were rounded off by forging new contacts and engaging in interesting discussions between representatives of industry and academia during the Conference Dinner. Finally, the organisers would like to express their sincere thanks to the internationally recognised members of the Scientific Committee and the industrial companies whose sponsorship made a significant contribution to the success of the Conference.
