Prizes and Honours

Each year, the GDCh Division of Chemical Education announces awards honouring individuals who have made outstanding contributions to promoting chemistry and experimentation in schools, as well as chemistry education research.

Award for teachers in primary schools

The prize, endowed with €1,000 and donated by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, is intended to promote chemistry in primary school general studies. Since 2009, it has been awarded to primary school teachers who have demonstrated particular commitment to strengthening the scientific and technical components of general studies, especially chemistry-related content, in primary schools. 2025 prize winner: Ms Susanne Grammel

Friedrich Stromeyer Award

The prize, endowed with € 3,000 and donated by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, is intended to promote chemistry teaching. Since 1982, it has been awarded to male and female teachers who have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements in the field of chemistry teaching in schools. awardee 2025: Mr Dr. Erhard Irmer

Manfred and Wolfgang Flad Award

The award, endowed with €4,000 and donated by the Dr Flad Institute, is presented for particularly successful experimental lectures at the Division’s annual conferences, and/or for the experimental exploration of a specialist scientific field with regard to training, education and teaching, and/or for the development of an innovative experiment for chemical education. The award is presented every two years. 2025 awardee: Prof. Dr Stefan Schwarzer

Heinrich Roessler Award

The prize, endowed with €4,000 and the Heinrich Roessler Medal and established by Degussa AG, now Evonik Industries AG, Essen, has been awarded since 1984 to a personality from a school, university, industry or public life for outstanding services to chemical education. The prize is named after Degussa’s first technical director, who made pioneering contributions to science education and vocational training in the 19th century. The prize is awarded every two years. 2024 awardee: Mr StD Jürgen Nikolaus Kopp

The prize was awarded in 2005 and 2007 to early-career European scientists who were pursuing an academic qualification, had already completed their qualification phase – e.g. a doctorate or habilitation – or had reached their first professional position.
