Awards & Honors
The Association for Chemistry and Economics (VCW) awards a prize for excellent academic performance in the field of business chemistry. The prize is advertised and awarded annually throughout the German-speaking region.
The aim is to sharpen the profile of the business chemistry discipline within faculties of natural sciences and to achieve greater visibility externally. In particular, the business chemistry discipline and the award-winning graduates are to become better known in the industrial environment, thereby highlighting the attractiveness of the degree programme to students.
The prize is endowed with 1,000 euros.
The award is presented in a two-stage process.
In the first stage, the professors supervising students of industrial chemistry, in cooperation with the respective examination offices, nominate up to two candidates. The nominations are based on the overall grade of the Master's certificate, the successful completion of at least one internship in public- or private-sector institutions, and the development of the candidate’s personality through international experience, social engagement or similar activities.
The nominations must be accompanied by a personal reference (maximum one page) from the supervising university lecturer, as well as documents relating to any other additional qualifications.
In the second stage, the prize committee decides on the award based on the nominations submitted. The decisive factor in this assessment is the overall impression formed from the Master's grade, internship certificates, personal reference and the submitted documents confirming the further requirements.
The VCW Student Award is presented once a year to up to three award winners. Nominations for candidates must be submitted by the supervising university lecturer by 15 August of each year to the office of the German Chemical Society in electronic form to Maike Fries (m.fries@gdch.de). A maximum of two nominations may be submitted per university or higher education institution. Self-nominations are not permitted.
The submission consists of the candidate’s Master’s certificate, practical training certificate and CV, as well as a personal reference (maximum one page) from the supervising university lecturer. Other documented additional qualifications may be attached to the application.
The submitted Master’s theses must have been completed no more than one year previously.
The prize committee consists of four experts, one Board member and a representative appointed by the JuWiChem Federal Board. At least two members of the prize committee must come from industry and at least two from the Board or the core team of the VCW. The four experts on the prize committee are appointed by the VCW Board for a period of two years. Re-election is possible. In addition to the winner, the other nominations are also announced and recognised with a certificate.
