CheMento – Information for Mentors

As an established professional, you look back on the start of your career and think: If only I had known that back then! CheMento is the ideal tool for passing on your own experience and knowledge to the next generation of chemists while further developing your own social skills.

With CheMento, you can expand your own network with tomorrow’s high potentials and attract young talent to your company.

Benefits for Mentors

  • Reflection on your own professional career and leadership behaviour
  • Deepening of consulting, leadership or communication skills
  • New ideas and motivation for your own work
  • Expansion of your professional network in academia and industry
  • Recruitment of emerging talent

Who can take part?

Experienced chemists from all areas of chemistry who are interested in advising, accompanying and motivating early-career chemists as they transition into professional life can volunteer as mentors. You should have at least 3 years of professional experience. In addition, during the programme (duration: 12 months), you should be able to attend regular meetings with the assigned mentee. The format and frequency of these meetings will be agreed individually.

In addition to regular discussions, other forms of support can also be chosen:

  • Workplace shadowing
  • Joint attendance at events
  • Facilitating contacts
  • Project work
  • etc.

Please note: The wishes and expectations of the mentee applicants are the starting point for the matching process. We use the mentor applications to create a pool of potential mentors. We then try to find a suitable mentor from the pool for each mentee. This means that not every mentor will be assigned a mentee. Not being selected is therefore expressly not an assessment of your professional or personal qualifications.

The mentoring partnership

The individual needs of the mentees determine the topics of the collaboration. On this basis, the tandems agree at the beginning of the collaboration on the content and objectives of their joint mentoring year. The format and frequency of the respective meetings in addition to the supporting programme are also discussed and agreed at the beginning.

At the end of the collaboration, the tandems hold a closing meeting; mentees also prepare a brief report on their mentoring year.
