EuChemS is delighted to announce and congratulate the recipients of its awards recognising outstanding contributions to chemistry in Europe.

EuChemS Lecture Award 2024 – Maria Cuartero

The EuChemS Lecture Award, which promotes scientific cooperation among European chemists, has been granted to Maria Cuartero.

Maria Cuartero began her independent research in 2018 as a Marie Curie Fellow at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. She is currently Full Professor at UCAM (Spain) and Associate Professor at KTH. Her work focuses on ion sensing and the development of ion-selective electrodes, advancing both fundamental and applied aspects of analytical chemistry. She leads two research teams, with around 30 researchers, collaborating on a range of national and European projects. Her contributions include over 120 peer-reviewed publications and innovative work in miniaturisation and improved sensitivity of chemical sensors.

EuChemS Gold Medal 2026 – Marc Koper

Marc Koper, expert in surface chemistry and catalysis at Leiden University, The Netherlands, has been awarded the EuChemS Gold Medal 2026. This award, given every two years, recognises exceptional achievements of a scientist in the field of chemistry in Europe.

Marc Koper of Leiden University, The Netherlands, has been awarded the EuChemS Gold Medal 2026 for his outstanding contributions to chemistry in Europe. A specialist in surface chemistry and catalysis, his research focuses on electrocatalysis, computational electrochemistry, and electrochemical surface science, with applications in renewable energy. Marc Koper completed his PhD at Utrecht University in 1994, held postdoctoral fellowships in Germany and the Netherlands, and joined Leiden University in 2005. His numerous honors include the Spinoza Prize (2021), Allen J. Bard Award (2020), Netherlands Catalysis and Chemistry Award (2019), and Faraday Medal (2017). He also served as President of the International Society of Electrochemistry (2021–2022).
